I was talking to my brother-in-law Charlie about aging. Charlie and I happen to have birthdays two days apart but he is nine years older than I am. Each of us has our own perspective on the subject and he shares my qualms about getting older and not being as physically agile and attractive as we used to be. He said he wished he was still my age and he shared that his father who is 90+ years said he would like to be 80 again. It seems we are all yearning to be a smaller number as we grow older. We look back with nostalgia at someone who is at the number we once were.

My own mother is in her 80s but will not admit it. Each year she has what Alice In Wonderland calls an “un-birthday.” I might try this approach for my coming birthday and the many that I will continue to have (yes, I do want to live forever).

Isn’t aging an interesting process? Oprah turned 50 in the same year that we lost Mr. Rogers. Why can’t we “have our cake and eat it too?” Well, I have decided that I will face my aging with a pro-active approach.

As a Baby-Boomer, I will take advantage of all that health and beauty care professionals have developed for us. I am on the new South Beach Diet. I have recently been Botoxed. Did you know they charge by the unit (the professionals call it “a shot”)? I had so many I quit counting and only knew the number when I handed them my credit card. I could hardly believe I was handing someone my MasterCard for Botox!

I now know what others have known for years: you can eat right (I have), exercise daily (I have), do marathons (I have), ride your butt off (I have), and take a lot of vitamins (I have) — and you know what? You will still look older.

I don’t think it is fair at all. Inside my 50-something body is a young, vibrant woman who is still ready to conquer the world, to seek out all the adventure I can find.

I know I’m not alone with these thoughts.

I have gathered information from more than a thousand women. One of the most important findings of my research is that nearly half of women are afraid of getting older. To put that in perspective, around 30% say health is their greatest concern and less than 5% worry about dying. Other researchers have found that women are afraid they will become “invisible” as they get older. Well, I am here to tell you that this woman is not going to let herself become invisible to others, and I hope you won’t allow it, either.

OK reader. Let’s get honest. Share your true thoughts with other women, speak up about the reality of growing older in this youth-oriented society! Let us never give up our efforts to become great, beautiful, smart, fantastic, happy women.

You may be pleasantly surprised by just how much you can lower your utility bills by implementing the simple techniques listed below…

Seal Those Leaks

After finding your leaks, use caulking, weather stripping, and insulation to block them. This can reduce your energy bill up to 20 percent.

Clean That A/C Unit

Keeping your air conditioner clean can be a huge energy saver. You not only need to check the filters once a month, but also check the outside of the unit for dust or dirt. Keeping this outer part clean can help you air conditioner run more
efficiently.

Dust Those Coils

Keeping your refrigerator condenser coils clean is another energy saver. The condenser coils are on the squiggly shaped metal tubing on the back of most fridges. These can collect dust, and make your refrigerator work much harder.

Use Ceiling Fans

Smartly placed ceiling fans can really help with cooling and heating cost. For instance, in a stairwell, a ceiling fan can push hot air down in winter, and pull cool air up in summer. This can save energy for you because your heater and air conditioner aren’t working so hard.

Unplug Those Appliances

Many appliances continue to drain power even after you turn them off. Just a few examples include VCR’s, microwaves, DVD players, coffee makers, basically anything with a clock or timer. A good idea is to plug these kinds of appliances can into a power strip, so you can just flip the switch instead of unplugging them.

Insulate That Water Heater

Most people don’t think of this, but keeping your water heater warm can be a big saver, because it keeps the water in it warmer longer. An insulation blanket costs only about $10 and it will quickly pays for itself.

Change Those Showerheads

Installing water-saving showerheads in your home can cut the cost of your showers in half. Some of the newer models deliver a full spray using less than three gallons a minute. They aren’t very expensive and are easy to install. You also won’t run out of hot water as often.

Take Shorter Showers

Yet another no-brainer, taking shorter showers can save you a bundle. Just cutting your shower by five minutes can save up to 25 gallons a month. You can also save by not turning on your shower full force.

Turn That Computer Off

Many people shut down their computer at the end of the day to conserve energy. This is great, but sometimes they forget about their monitors, printers, speakers, etc. Making sure ALL your hardware is turned off can save energy.

Turn off That Water

Turning off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving can save you a bundle. Leaving the water running while you brush uses 2-4 gallons of water. If you only turn it on while rinsing, it only uses a few cups.

Dry Like Clothes Together

When washing and drying clothes, keep in mind that not all clothes take the same time to dry. For instance, a cotton shirt will take less time to dry than a pair of jeans. So it’s a good idea to wash all cottons together and all jeans together. That way, you’re not letting a load that’s mostly dry run longer just because of 1 pair of jeans.

Use Energy Saver Settings

Most newer refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and clothes dryers have energy saver settings. By simply having them all switched to the energy saver setting, you can save up to $400/year.

Hair Shampoos:

Over and above the daily brushing, it is necessary to remove from the hair dirt and all the secretions of sebaceous glands which accumulate on the scalp. The process of shampoo is divided in two portions so that you lather twice and rinse after each lather. Rinse thoroughly in plenty of water (preferably rain water) until the hair squeaks when you rub it with your fingers.

Now the question arises how often you must shampoo. Women are advised to shampoo once every 8 to 10 days for normal hair, once every fortnight for dry hair and once everY,5 to 8 days for oily hair. I would like to mention that too frequent washing of hair, however good the quality of the shampoo used, can in the long run cause damage to the hair. There is at present in the market quite a large selection of products ranging from ordinary soaps to medicated shampoos. Buy these products preferably from a chemists shop or a reputed general store.

There is a large variety of liquid shampoos presently available in the market. These synthetic detergents were developed during 1939-40. These soapless shampoos, whether used in hard water or soft water, leave no white deposit on the hair when dry. They also clean the hair more thoroughly due to their greater lathering and emulsifying power. Do not use ordinary household detergents to wash the hair. These are crude, very alkaline and can act as an irritant. Manufacturers usually add to the refined detergents soapless shampoo, perfume and other products such as lanolin and lecithin to render the hair supple and glossy after washing.

Medicated Shampoos

These shampoos are used to correct any disorder of secretion in the scalp. If you have dry hair, choose a shampoo based on cod oil, tar or lecithin. If you have oily hair, a shampoo containing sulphur or essence of cedar is best. There are dry and coloring shampoos widely used in western countries. Dry shampoos come in an extremely fine powder form which is sprinkled over the hair and then removed by very thorough brushing. Their main advantage is that no wetting of the hair is required. They consist of a mixture of synthetic detergent in powder form and mineral salts. Mostly sodium salts are used which absorb fatty matter. Thus the hair can be cleaned without too frequent washing, and because of this they are particularly recommended for oily hair.

Coloring shampoos have become very popular in recent years for brightening the color of the hair. They are in fact good shampoos with a detergent base to which has been added either a bleach or a dye which is much less harmful than the real dyes because it does not penetrate the hair but only covers it with a thin coloring film. Coloring shampoos are generally harmless, but they can affect those who are susceptible to allergies, by causing an eczema on the face and swelling or irritation on the scalp. To avoid these severe allergies, do not use coloring shampoos during periods, pregnancy, menopause, ovarian upsets, and skin troubles. .

To carry out a shampoo properly, begin by soaking your hair in hot (not too hot) water. Too hot water is not good for the hair or the scalp. Pour on to the hair a small quantity of shampoo and rub the scalp with the tips of your fingers vigorously. If your hair is long or very thick, slip your fingers right through the hair to the scalp itself, and rub it vigorously but not roughly. Next rinse completely with hot water, and again apply a Jot of shampoo. Rub in, but this time more with the hands flat. Do not penetrate through to the scalp, but gently rub the half. The shampoo should foam cleanly. If not, apply more shampoo for the third time. The rinsing which follows must be very thorough. Rinsing should not stop until the water from this last rinse is completely clear. At the slightest trace of soap or foam, at the slightest tingling from the scalp, do not hesitate to carry out an extra rinse.

Next you should wring the hair, but never twist it, in a thick towel. Wrap the dry towel like a turban around your hair. A hair dryer can also be used for this purpose, but avoid too hot air.

The word Alaska brings to mind a sense of vastness and sheer open spaces, while being recognizing as a natural source of awe and mystery – plus being one of the best skiing spots in the world. Considered by some as one of the finest four season family resorts, the Alyeska Prince Hotel and Ski Resort – located 35 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska – has a top elevation of 2,751 feet with a 2,501 vertical drop. Alaska has some of the best skiing in the world, yet at the Alyeska Resort we do not find overly crowded slopes with long lift lines. To accommodate for the large number of skiers, there are nine lifts, which includes six chair lifts, two surface lifts, and one cable car line. There are 68 trails for beginners, intermediates, and experts, with the majority of the trails designed for intermediate skiers.

Nighttime skiing is allowed, which helps to make the ski experience more adventurous and thrilling. Exciting views such as the snow-capped mountains, hanging glaciers, and of course, the famous Northern Lights can be seen during this time. Skiing Magazine ranks this resort number nine of the top 25 killer ski trips. Every year, this skiing winter wonderland receives about 631 inches of snow, warming the hearts of the world’s skiers who enjoy traveling to Alaska. Once a person stays at the Alyeska Prince Hotel, there never will be a doubt this is the place to stay for the utmost Alaska ski vacations!

The ultimate enjoyment of their elegant rooms and exquisite dining, combined with popular nightly entertainment, shows the Alaska ski resorts are the perfect places to vacation, where you can not only ski but also enjoy the last of our country’s great frontiers. At the Alyeska Resort, the perfect winter vacation can be experienced when spirited outdoor skiers brave the elements, then return to the Alyeska Hotel for some old-fashioned, home-style pampering. Get a taste of what Alaska is really about and what serious skiing is! There are enjoyable activities for the entire family, from grandma and grandpa on down to tiny tots, with many area sights and attractions to be seen. If you decide to “go out on the town” while touring the area, several nightlife spots are just as fun and enjoyable, but are not associated with the Alyeska Price Hotel.

Mid-November is when the skiing season begins at the Alyeska Resort, running until mid-April. This area encompasses the longest daytime hours in the United States, having sixteen hours of daylight each day in the month of April. During December, however, there is only seven hours of daylight, which means there is more time for night skiing. If skiing is something that doesn’t interest you, then tubing may. The Glacier Tubing Park features two lanes of terrain, with a surface lift – everyone in the family will enjoy spending time here. Also is the Alyeska Terrain Park, an absolute must for snowboarding enthusiasts.

Other winter activities that can be enjoyed in and around the Alyeska Resort include flight seeing, helisking, ocean cruising tours, dog sledding, ice climbing, back country skiing, mountaineering, and polar bear viewing. If none of these winter activities appeal to you, sit back and relax at the Alyeska Resort, and enjoy the peace and quiet while everyone is out doing winter activities!

With the help of charter coaches you can get there inexpensively and without the hassle of having to arrange your own transportation.

Charter coaches are usually in the form of large buses. These buses are equipped to hold dozens of people in comfort. They boast large seats and washroom facilities. Most, if not all, also offer their passengers the luxury of traveling in air conditioning. If you’re headed to the Nevada desert in the middle of July, you’ll surely be thankful for this.

You can plan on taking a charter coach in one of several ways. The first is by arranging a trip with a group of friends. If you are wanting to try your luck playing black jack on the Las Vegas strip, you can easily arrange for your own coaches. The best method is to call different charter companies and inquire about the specifics. You need to know the total cost of renting charter coaches including insurance and gasoline. The all you have to do is divide the cost by the number of people heading out on the trip and you’ve got a comfortable ride at a reasonable cost.

If just you and one or two friends want to take a charter coach for the weekend, you can inquire about that as well. Some companies have weekly or bi-weekly charter coaches that leave at convenient times. It may be late Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning, but if you catch the charter this way, you’re sure to save money as well.

Make certain that you do ask about any stops along the way. You don’t want to get aboard a charter coach that stops constantly to pick-up passengers. This can really impact the amount of traveling time you’ll be subjected to. You may be better off to travel to another city by car first and then catch one of the charter coaches to your final destination.

Every large city has several companies that offer these types of services. To find the best deal, just give them a quick call to get a quote. You can also do some search online using search engines which will return hundreds of results, most likely all companies have websites with all services and rates listed and look for the contact us link to get their contacts. Before you know it you’ll be on one of the charter coaches headed out for a weekend filled with fun.

IATA (International Air Transport Association) conducts all international flights and almost all international airlines (94%) operate under this association. The pricing structure and all other decisions associated with an international flight are made by the IATA. They do not normally give permission to international airlines to lower their rates if other airlines are offering regular airfares. However, they do sometimes allow consolidators to buy airline tickets in bulk at low price and sell them off to travelers.

If you are searching for cheap airfares online, you will come across many websites offering national as well as international packages. These sites are composed of Mega Online agencies and B&M Travel agencies. Other sites are composed of travel consolidators who specialize in providing the best possible deals to their customers. You will find out that these sites have different international policies because of the fact that international airfares are mainly handled by the IATA.

Airline Consolidator is a place where you will be able to find cheap international and domestic flights to many locations across the globe. Whether you are flying to Asia, Europe, Indian sub-continent or Africa, you will be able to locate an inexpensive flight and save up to 70% of your airfare. If you buy tickets directly from airlines, they will also tell you that this is the lowest possible rate any airline can offer. However, searching on these online resources you will find still cheaper airfares. Fareline International is another popular name under this category. They specialize in selling international airfares to Europe and Asia.

While purchasing online it is recommended that you ask for the total cost of a ticket. Sometimes they list only the airfare exclusive of hidden charges. Some companies do not have additional charges if someone is paying by credit card. You will have to be careful in selecting your package depending on all these factors and other considerations. All requests made through e-mail are answered within 24 hours. Remember that the tickets sold by consolidators are sometimes restricted. This means that if you want to change your travel plans you will be given a penalty because they have to book flights in order to give all passengers the quoted price. Regular airfares allow you to travel more flexibly because they allow you to change your travel plans anytime. Of course, in the latter case you have to pay more.

If you cant find an international flight on any of these websites, you can call a travel expert and ask for advice. Sometimes airline names are not mentioned on consolidator websites. They will e-mail you all the details once you have purchased their package. This does not mean that their system is faulty; they have contracts with airlines which state that they cannot mention the airline names publicly. Mostly these airlines are the most popular international airlines of a country. Booking online sometimes help to save up to 40% of already cheap airfare. Sometimes you are not given a physical ticket; instead you will be receiving an e-ticket or a confirmation number and some other details that you will be able to use at the airport to get into the plane.

When you are buying international tickets from consolidators, it is your own responsibility to ensure that all your travel documents (passports and visas) are complete and legal. Read all instructions and company policies before buying your tickets or packages. They will not be responsible for any mishaps or loss of tickets once you have received your tickets. You will have to buy another package in such a case. Being careful in all these matters will help you travel wisely and without any major difficulty, and most of all travel affordably.

You might have heard of the practice of pre booking of airport parking. Do you know what the biggest advantage of advance airport parking is? It lets you control your own itinerary and this has made it a winning concept in the recent years.

If you think, it takes a lot of trouble to book airport parking, then you are grossly wrong. It is a process that is easy, quick and safe.

Cab is more reliable option than public transport. But it is expensive, and sometimes it too seems inconvenient, if you compare the superb facilities of advance airport parking.

As for instance, just imagine how wonderful it would be if the chauffeur takes over the charge from you once you step in the airport and park your car in the safety of a covered area, when a shuttle service will take you from the parking lot to your terminal! Of course the chauffeur service will cost you a bit more and if you do not want to pay that extra, you can opt for the self-parking option. However, the shuttle service to the terminal is included in the parking fees of most of the parking companies.

So just look at it: how much you have gained from an advance booking of parking lot! You have bought the air ticket well in advance, you have booked the hotel, you have booked place in the conducted tours haven’t you? Then why should you not book the space for parking in advance?

If you are a frequent air traveler, you probably have the clear picture of US airports during the summer or other holiday seasons. The maddening rush won’t allow even a housefly to park itself near airport; forget about your car. And if you do not have the reservation, there is every possibility of missing the flight; in the absence of a secure place you have to drive around frantically in the parking area cursing the madding rush but with no result.

In most of the cases, people end up coughing up a lot of dollars to secure a place in an expensive parking space. And this is here, where comes the relevance of advance booking. An advance booking saves a lot of your valuable time and money. If you devote a little time prior to your journey, you will be rewarded with an anxiety free journey.

You can save money in a number of ways: suppose you have a light luggage with you; do not take the chauffeur service to save some money. If the season is dry, you do not need to go for indoor parking; a covered space well serves your purpose. With a reservation, you just need to show up in the appointed day that’s all. You will be directed to the pre booked space; you have to park your car and catch the free shuttle service to be taken to the designated terminal.

So, become your own boss, drive your own car to airport. On the strength of reservation coupon, you do not have to worry about anything else.

Here are 5 common ways that you can waste your time and money when trying to get a job on a cruise ship:

1. Being influenced by someone who ‘guarantees’ you a cruise ship job if you pay them $$$$. Unfortunately this a false promise and one of the biggest scams out there. And anyone who guarantees you a job on a cruise ship and then asks you for money upfront is conning you. Plain and simple. After all, they don’t know who you are and they know nothing about your personality, skills, experience or qualifications, so how can they make this promise?

Remember, the only people who can assure you of a job are the cruise line companies themselves. That’s after they’ve reviewed your application, interviewed you, checked out your references, etc, etc. And they won’t charge you for the job at the end of it either!

2. Emailing your resume to cruise line companies, without them asking you to. If a cruise line company wants you to email them, then they will tell you to via a job advertisement or through the employment page of their website. They will also give you a specific address to email. But too many people make the mistake of simply firing-off a load of hopeful emails to cruise lines, in the hope that one gets through to the right person. Your chances of success are slim to none by following this method.

A much more effective approach is to prepare a great looking ‘resume package’ that is physically posted to the correct person at the cruise company.

3. Posting your resume to an online service where cruise lines supposedly browse this website for potential candidates. Guess what? Cruise lines don’t need to do this because they already have thousands of people applying to them every week of the year. And they use a network of employment agencies in virtually every country that do a lot of their screening, interviewing and recruiting for them.

4. Purchasing an “official application form”. There is no such thing as an “official” cruise ship job application form, no more than there is an official application form for the ‘automobile industry’ or the ‘retail industry’. Each cruise line company will have its OWN standard application form. The application form for Carnival Cruise Lines is NOT the same as the application form for Holland America Line and so on. So an application received on any other form but their own, will go straight in the trash can. It’s worthless to them.

Unfortunately there are several companies out there who will happily charge you $49 – $99 for their “official cruise line application form”. So not only are you pinning your hopes on a useless form that won’t even get looked at, but you’re also paying for this privilege!

The only way to apply for cruise jobs is via the method that the cruise line has set in place. Be it an online application form which is on THEIR website or sending your resume to a postal or email address in which THEY have specified.

5. Relying on poor, outdated information. Yes, there is a lot of free information on the internet. But often these ‘freebie’ websites do more harm than good. After all, where’s the incentive for the site owner to keep his stuff nice and fresh and continually updated? There isn’t any.

We get emails from people all the time telling us how they mailed 10 fancy resume packages off 3 months ago, but have just had 7 back ‘returned to sender’. This is false economy. So not only have you wasted money in postage fees, but you have just also wasted 3 valuable months in which you could have had the interview, got the job and maybe now working onboard in some far-off exotic location!

Look closely at any website offering cruise ship job info whether it’s a freebie or a paid site. And ask yourself; does this site look professional? Or does it look like it was put together by a hack amateur sitting in his bedroom hoping to make a few easy dollars? And do you believe that the website owner has genuinely worked on a cruse ship and has helped others do the same? If not, do you really want to be trusting their information?

Also remember that investing in quality information is NOT the same as “paying for a job”. If the product or service is good, then you are paying for the time, energy and money that goes into keeping everything updated and providing you with a good support service as and when you need it.

So there you have it. I hope you have found this information useful in your cruise ship job search.
